More pressure: US expands sanctions against Russia

On March 2, the United States announced new sanctions against Russia and tightened controls on high-tech exports to Belarus.

Measures are being taken in response to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to launch an armed invasion of Ukraine.

Comment: «The United States will take actions to hold Belarus accountable for enabling Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, weaken the Russian defense sector and its military power for years to come, target Russia’s most important sources of wealth», – according to a statement on the White House website.

The new package of sanctions applies to 22 Russian companies related to the defense sector. Export control is also being introduced over the technologies needed by Russia at oil and gas refineries..

Washington said the United States and its allies and partners have a common interest in lowering Russia’s status as a leading supplier of energy. The United States has also said that the measures taken will help achieve this goal while protecting American consumers.

The US administration notes that the strict export controls already in place on Russia will soon be extended to Belarus.
