The International Court of Justice delivers its Order to stop the invasion in Ukraine

The International Court of Justice, a top UN Court, made an interim decision on a request of Ukraine against Russia.

The Russian Federation shall immediately suspend the military operations that it commenced on Feb 24, 2022 on the territory of Ukraine. The ICJ judges said in a 13-2 decision.

The Russian Federation shall ensure that any military or irregular armed units which may be directed or supported by it, as well as any organization  or persons subject to its control and direction, shall take no steps in furtherance of the above military operations. Order was passed by a majority of 13 votes against 2.

Both Parties shall refrain from any action which might aggravate or extend the dispute before the Court or make it more difficult to resolve.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the news on Twitter, saying that Ukraine gained a complete victory in its case against Russia at the International Court of Justice.

Comment:

“The ICJ ordered to immediately stop the invasion. The order is binding under international law. Russia must comply immediately. Ignoring the order will isolate Russia even further”.
