Ukraine demands that the UN Security Council take measures to demilitarize the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Calls for the introduction of a special UN mission.
Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk stated it during a briefing on March 27.
Comment: Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk:
“In the context of nuclear safety, the irresponsible and unprofessional actions of the Russian military pose a deliberate threat not only to Ukraine but also to hundreds of millions of Europeans. Therefore, we demand that the UN Security Council take immediate measures to demilitarize the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and establish a special UN mission to eliminate the risk of a recurrence of the Chernobyl accident as a result of the actions of Russian occupation forces. “
She stressed that the Russian occupiers posed a genuine risk to the exclusion zone and the continued militarization of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, namely the destruction of the insulation of the fourth unit of the station after the 1986 explosion. Such destruction will inevitably lead to large amounts of radioactive fallout. It will pollute not only Ukraine but also other European countries.
