Vladimir Putin has signed a decree that transfers gas payments to “unfriendly countries” in rubles.
Russian RBC reported this.
Putin announced the signing of the decree at an aviation conference. According to him, “unfriendly countries” should open ruble accounts in Russian banks to pay for gas.
In turn, Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that if such payments are not made by the country, Russia will believe that it is not fulfilling its obligations. Therefore, Russia will suspend gas supplies.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the Polish oil and gas company PGNiG, French President Emmanuel Macron and Austria’s OMV have previously refused to pay for Russian gas in rubles. Besides, the G7 countries have agreed to reject Russia’s request to pay for energy imports in rubles.
