In Russia, 85 volunteers will be created to participate in the war against Ukraine in order to avoid the announcement of general mobilization

The Russian Federation obliged each region (and there are 85 of them, including the temporarily occupied Crimea) to create and financially provide one new battalion of “volunteers” to participate in the war against Ukraine. This was reported by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine in Telegram.

Context. Not all regions can form battalions from the local population. In Moscow, “volunteers” recruit men from Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. They are motivated by high salaries and the opportunity to obtain citizenship of the Russian Federation.

More details. Russia does not want to announce a general mobilization, because then it would contradict their “special operation” narratives. Therefore, Ukrainians from the temporarily occupied Kherson Oblast and Zaporozhye Oblast are forced to sign “contracts” with the Russian army.

Military personnel from Russia are conscripted through private military companies, the Russian Guard and the so-called quasi-republics of the L/DNR. Men from Russian colonies are also recruited for service.
